I think it's because the Savage comes closer than anything else on the market to an old British bike. If you look at motorcycles from a generation or more ago, they used to be fairly simple straight-forward bikes with a single or twin engine, no fancy bodywork, about 30 or so HP, about 400 pounds, etc. I think if you went back in time to the 50s or 60s and showed a typical rider a typical bike of today like a Gold Wing or a CBR600, they just wouldn't be able to relate to it.
I like the new Kawasaki W650, and that Honda GB500 that was sold a few years back. I'd like to see more simple, elemental bikes like the Savage sold.
